Dress Up – Conversations with Stella

I am Stella, Queen of the Olde Bulldogges. What’cha doin’, Lady Human? ‘Cuz whatever it is, it looks kinda dumb.

Me: Why, thank you so much, Stella. I’m trying on some dressy clothes in case I need to dress up.

Stella:  Isn’t that what humans do every day? You put on all that stuff.

Me:  Yes, but there are clothes and then there are dress clothes. You know, for parties or church events or special business.

Stella:  No, I don’t know. I have never understood why humans drape themselves with all that cloth. A blanket on a bed on a cold day or night, yes. But to walk around in and get caught on bushes and trees and brush and then you throw them in that loud machine and slosh them in water. Human nonsense. And now you tell me that you have to use different clothes for different days.

Me:  And by the way, how about your special sweater that I made for you. When the next norther comes through, you should wear that.

Stella:  Oh, no! I remember that thing. You can keep that dress up stuff all to yourself. I am proud to be naked and a dog.

Who Do You Think You Are? – Conversations with Stella

I am Stella, Queen of the Olde English Bulldogges.

Me:  Stella, you have to scooch over. I need to sit there.

Stella:  Nope, I’m fine right where I am.

Me:  I mean it. You haven’t left me enough room to sit down.

Stella:  You sit too much as it is.

Me:  Excuse me, but…

Stella:  Okay, I excuse your butt. However, I prefer not to use that word, thank you.

Me:  Uh, who do you think you are?

Stella:  I know who I am. Haven’t you been paying attention all this time? I am Stella, Queen of the Olde English Bulldogges. I thought that I had made that clear. Now who do YOU think YOU are?

Me:  I am the owner of that chair.

Stella:  Typical human behavior. Always grabbing everything for themselves.

Fiddlin’ Around – Conversations with Stella

I am Stella, Queen of the Olde English Bulldogges. I’ll put this here. No. Here. And that goes over there. No. It goes over here, too.

Me:  What are you doing, girl?

Stella:  The same thing humans do. What does it look like?

Me:  Looks like you’re fiddlin’ around with stuff.

Stella:  Fiddlin’. Okay. I’m fiddlin’. Fiddlin’ sounds important.

Me:  Well, sometimes. Like fiddlin’ with an engine to make it run. Or fiddlin’ on a violin which is a fiddle. But what you’re doing just looks like you’re moving one thing and then moving another to no real purpose.

Stella:  Shows how much a human knows. This toy has to be in the right place for my head to rest on comfortably and so no one else, meaning you, Lady Human, can play with it. And this blanket has to be piled up over here to support my belly so it won’t slump on the mattress.

Me:  Oh, excuse me. I totally misunderstood.

Stella:  That’s because you like all humans were fiddlin’ in your head over things you know nothing about.

Where Is Our Snow? – Conversations with Stella

I am Stella, Queen of the Olde English Bulldogges. Lady Human, everyone on the Picture Box has that cold, white stuff on the ground.

Me:  Snow?

Stella:  I don’t remember what it is called, but we don’t have any. Where is our cold, white stuff on the ground?

Me:  We haven’t had any thus far this season, but it is way early for us to have snow. Did you really like it so much when we had it back in February?

Stella:  No, of course not. Who like having cold, wet feet?

Me:  What’s the problem then?

Stella:  I don’t like walking in it. I just like looking at it. From a distance. With my feet all warm and toasty. Never mind. Cancel my order. I’ll just stick with the Picture Box stuff. This way I can enjoy it without living in it.

The Pleasure of Your Company – Conversations with Stella

I am Stella, Queen of the Olde English Bulldogges. Why are you still a lay-abed, Lady Human?

Me:  Well, I don’t have to be up early and it’s comfortable here.

Stella:  Don’t you want breakfast? I thought that humans lived for breakfast.

Me:  Huh, I thought bulldogs did. Why are you still a lay-abed?

Stella: Well, I don’t need to potty and it’s comfortable here and well, I like the pleasure of your company.

Me:  I like the pleasure of your company, too, Stella. So does that mean you’ll skip breakfast?

Stella:  Don’t be ridiculous! That’s taking togetherness way too far!

Bright and Shiny – Conversations with Stella

I am Stella, Queen of the Olde English Bulldogges. Your neck is shining, Lady Human. Something is different.

Me:  Tall Man gave me a new cross necklace for Christmas.

Stella:  Why?

Me:  He was being nice, and he knew I would like it. I like the color blue and the cross reminds me of Jesus.

Stella:  I thought humans did not wear collars.

Me:  We don’t, except I guess that’s what a necklace looks like to you.

Stella:  It is brighter and shinier than my collar. So when do I get mine?

Me:  You’re what?

Stella: My bright and shiny necklace collar.

Me:  I don’t think a necklace would last too long on a bulldog.

Stella: Typical. The humans hoarding all the bright and shiny for themselves.

Me:  Tell ya what. You can get a new bright and shiny collar or I have one piece of cooked bacon here…

Stella:  YES! That’s fair. That’s my idea of bright and shiny.

Lights! Camera! – Conversations with Stella

I am Stella, Queen of the Olde English Bulldogges. Lady Human, what’s going on?

Me:  It’s Christmas. We are celebrating.

Stella: Is that why the humans are acting up?

Me:  I don’t think we are ‘acting up’.

Stella:  Lights are on all over the house. And Tall Man is pointing his little black hand box everywhere and the little human is squealing for no reason.

Me:  Well, not for no reason. There are gifts. And the pictures are for us to look at in the future and remember.

Stella:  Excuse me for saying so, Lady Human, but humans don’t know the first thing about celebrating anything. Lights? Pictures? Gifts? Food, Lady Human! FOOD!

Me: Oh, yeah, and there’s food.

Stella:  Woo-hoo! Now you’re talkin’ bulldog!

Giant Headrest – Conversations with Stella

I am Stella, Queen of the Olde English Bulldogges. My head is huge and heavy. When I want to rest, I search for the biggest, squishiest headrest I can find, and it always turns out to be the same. Lady Human.

Me: Nope.

Stella:  Yup.

Me:  Not right now. Use one of the cushions.

Stella:  But those smell like dog.

Me:  To be honest, so do I.

Stella:  Yeah, but I’m the dog you smell like, so that’s okay.

Queen MoonCat – Conversations with Stella and MoonCat

I am Stella, Queen…

MoonCat:  I am MoonCat, Queen of the Olde English Bulldogges.

Stella:  No. I am Stella, Queen of the Olde…

MoonCat:  Meow. You were the Queen. The bulldogges listen to me now. Meow.

Stella:  Lady Human, stop this cat madness!

Me:  Well, MoonCat has been telling Doodlebug when to call the breakfast hour.

Stella:  Just because I sleep through breakfast is no reason to say…

MoonCat:  Meow. I tell the bulldogs when breakfast is because I get hungry, and the former queen is asleep. The bulldogs don’t mind because they get to eat breakfast, too.

Stella:  Preposterous! I’ll bet you don’t even know what that means.

MoonCat:  Of course, I know what it means. It means ‘bulldog’.

A Flurry of Squirrels – Conversations with Stella

I am Stella, Queen of the Olde English Bulldogges. They’re invading! Run! No! Charge! No! Jump around and run in circles!

Me:  Wow! That’s a bunch of squirrels! I wonder where they’re headed.

Stella:  They’re in our yard! That’s where they’re headed! They’re going to eat our food!

Me:  Y’all eat inside, except for Doodlebug who prefers fresh air dining and, believe me, no squirrel is ever going to have a chance at his food.

Stella:  Put up a taller fence, Lady Human!

Me:  That wouldn’t do anything. Squirrels scamper up fences the way they scamper up trees. Hey, maybe they are missing the old pecan tree.

Stella:  Lady Human, I demand that you build a roof over our yard.

Me:  Nope.

Stella:  Fine then! When you go out one day and find a pack of squirrels having tea in your lawn chair, don’t complain to me!

Me:  I won’t. And I would kind of like to see something like that.

Stella:  Winter boredom really has set in for you, hasn’t it?

Harumph! – Conversations with Stella

I am Stella, Queen of the Olde English Bulldogges. Harumph!

Me:  What’s that you say?

Stella:  You heard me.

Me:  I heard you, but I don’t understand.

Stella:  Harumph!

Me:  Why are you making that noise?

Stella:  I think I am being clear. Harumph!

Me:  Please translate.

Stella:  Harumph – the universal sound of bulldog discontent.

Me:  Discontent about what?

Stella:  That’s the beauty of Harumph. It can mean anything that we want it to mean. You have to figure it out. But be assured. The next time I harumph, it will mean something completely different. Keeps life exciting, doesn’t it?

Me:  Exciting isn’t the word I would use.

Stella: Harumph!

You Stink! – Conversations with Stella

I am Stella, Queen of the Olde English Bulldogges. Lady Human, you stink!

Me:  How can a bulldog call anyone ‘stinky’?

Stella:  We are stink experts. We know it when we smell it.

Me:  I don’t see how I can smell much different than any other day.

Stella:  You don’t.

Me:  You mean…

Stella:  Sorry, Lady Human, We’ve been keeping the complaints to ourselves. It’s the price we pay for having our sensitive noses.

Me:  Maybe I should put on some perfume.

Stella:  NOOOOOO! That’s the stink!

Reindeer on the Roof – Conversations with Stella

I am Stella, Queen of the Olde English Bulldogges. Hurry, Lady Human! Listen! Those reindeer that man on your little picture box was talking about! They’re here!

Me:  Nope.

Stella:  Yes, they are! Here them tromping on the roof! This is exciting!

Me:  It’s exciting, but not in a good way.

Stella:  Let’s go see them. Is that chubby man in the red suit with them?

Me:  Those aren’t reindeer tromping on the roof, girl. Those are rats.

Stella:  Rats? Really? Well, that’s not so special…unless…are they pulling a tiny sliding box with gifts?

Slow Service – Conversations with Stella

I am Stella, Queen of the Olde English Bulldogges. Lady Human! Waiting! Still!

Me:  Patience is a virtue. I only move so fast and no faster.

Stella:  You need to work on that. Service around here has never been great, but now it is nonexistent.

Me:  Nonexistent? Let’s see. You each eat three meals a day. And there are the water bowl cleanings and refillings. And the multiple potty breaks…

Stella:  Blah. Blah. Blah. Less talk. More action. Hop to it, ma’am. Bulldogs don’t have all day.

Bottle It and Sell It – Conversation with Stella

I am Stella, Queen of the Olde English Bulldogges. Whirl and twirl! Yee-hah! Go! Go! Go!

Me:  Stella, settle down! Please! It’s settle down time.

Stella: Nope. Bounce! Bounce! Bounce! Ahhh-wooo!

Me:  How is it you have this kind of energy at the end of the day?

Stella:  Bulldoggy. Just plain bulldogginess.

Me:  I sure could use some of that energy myself. If I knew how, I would bottle it and sell it.

Stella:  If you’re going to bottle and sell my jumpy, pumpy bulldog energy, make sure I get my share. I accept bacon, special treats, T-bone steaks, oh well, you know, this list goes on and on and on….

The Naked Yard Part 2 – Conversations with Stella

I am Stella, Queen of the Olde English Bulldogges. The world has changed. Nothing will ever be the same again.

Me:  Is this about the dead pecan tree?

Stella:  Yes, and don’t talk about it. It hurts my feelings.

Me: It will if you think only about what was lost. Have you noticed how many birds have come into the yard since the dead tree was cut back the other day? Woodpeckers, mockingbirds, sparrows…

Stella:  But why now? The Bird Tree is gone.

Me:  The big stump is left. And they are finding new places to perch. Not everything has changed. We just make some adjustments.

Stella:  Is it alright if I say something about the old pecan tree?

Me: Sure.

Stella:  Dear Old Pecan Tree, we miss you. We may get used to you being gone, but one thing is for sure. Our bulldog world is a lot weirder now. And the yard is a whole bunch emptier. But at least squirrels won’t be able to throw nuts on our heads from your branches anymore.

The Naked Yard, Part 1 – Conversations with Stella

I am Stella, Queen of the Olde English Bulldogges. Lady Human, Tall Man is doing something strange in the yard. It is noisy and I don’t like it.

Me:  Yes, and you all can’t go in the yard for a while until he finishes.

Stella:  It’s our yard. We just allow humans to use it. Why shouldn’t we go out?

Me:  He is taking down what is left of the old pecan tree, the one that Snow-pocalypse killed last winter. Some of it is already gone, but the rest needs to come down.

Stella:  No more tree? But what…how…what about…awwww!

Me:  Yeah, I know. It was the last big tree in the backyard, but it just didn’t make it past that big freeze. And that on top of the big summer storm with the hurricane force winds that took down our old oak two years ago.

Stella:  But now the yard will be all naked.

Me:  It does take a long time to grow a big tree. There are other plants out there.

Stella:  I can see through the window. The sky looks so empty. How can something be there for so long and then just be gone?

Me: The stump will still be there.

Stella:  Small comfort, but at least Doodlebug will still have something to pee on.

A Cat’s Well-Trained Bulldog – Conversations with Stella, MoonCat and Doodlebug

I am Stella, Queen of the Old English Bulldogges. She’s doing it again, Lady Human! Why, oh why? Make it stop!

Me:  What is going on in here?

MoonCat:  Meow! Hello! Welcome to playtime!

Me:  No, it is not. We are trying to sleep.

Doodlebug:  But that doesn’t work during playtime, does it? MoonCat told me to call you.

MoonCat:  Yes, because my voice is not loud enough.

Me: That’s debatable. You cannot keep waking up the household in the middle of the night.

Doodlebug: I can.

Me:  I mean you shouldn’t. Why are you doing what a cat tells you to do anyway?

Doodlebug:  When you put it like that, I don’t know.

Me:  MoonCat has trained you to call me in the dark of night when neither one of you need anything.

MoonCat:  Meow. Excuse me, but I do need an extra tasty snack and my food bowl is only half full. Sleep can wait.

Just A Little Shot of “Want To” – Conversations with Stella

I am Stella, Queen of the Olde English Bulldogges.

Me:  Hey, Stella, let’s go sit outside.

Stella:  Nope.

Me:  Okay, well, how about a walk?

Stella:  You have got to be kidding.

Me:  Don’t you want to do anything?

Stella:  Nope. I’ve said it before. I’ll say it again, Lady Human. What part of “bulldog” do you not understand?

Chain Saws – Conversations with Stella

I am Stella, Queen of the Olde English Bulldogges. Lady Human! A human is cutting down a tree in the living room.

Me: What? No, there are no trees in the house.

Stella:  But it’s that ugly, buzzing noise. Listen! You always say that a human is cutting a tree when we hear that.

Me:  Yeah, usually, but this time it’s the pack sawing logs.

Stella:  No! Never give a chain saw to a bulldog! They won’t know when to stop!

Me:  They do sound like chain saws, I’ll have to admit, but it’s snoring. Humans sometimes call that ‘sawing logs’ when it’s really loud.

Stella:  So, we are safe.

Me:  Sure, and you’ve been known to saw a few logs yourself.

Stella:  Now you’re just making stuff up. If I ever made a noise like that, I would be the first one to tell myself to shut up.
