School – Conversations with the Pack

I am Doodlebug, King of the Olde English Bulldogges. Where did Little Human go?

Me: School.

Sweetie: I want to go to school.

Me: They don’t allow dogs.

Sweetie: Not fair! Wait! Is that where humans learn to make big ugly marks on paper?

Me: Writing, yes.

Doodlebug: And other humans look at the marks and pretend they mean something?

Me: Reading, yes.

Sweetie: Poor little humans.

Doodlebug: Never mind.

MoonCat: We’ll stay here and do something useful like take a nap.

Paper Scratching – Conversations with the Pack

I am Doodlebug, King of the Olde English Bulldogges.

Sweetie: That pointy stick in your hand is making that scratchy noise again, Lady Human.

Me: Yeah, that happens.

Doodlebug: Is the paper stuff itchy so you have to scratch it?

Me: Huh? No, paper isn’t alive. It has no feeling of its own.

Sweetie: So you make the stick mark it up so you will feel something.

Me: Well…I guess so. Pens don’t tell themselves what to write.

MoonCat: Poor old paper. It looked so nice and clean before all that scratching.

Write Out Loud! – Conversations with the Pack

I am Doodlebug. King of the Olde English Bulldogges. What are you doing, Lady Human?

Sweetie: She is scratching a poor innocent piece of paper with her stick again.

Me: It’s called ‘writing’. I put words down on the paper in ink so they can be read.

MoonCat: Words? I don’t hear anything except the scratching. Does the scratching make you feel better? Scratching makes me feel better.

Me: Uh, different type of scratching. I guess it makes me feel better to get the words out.

Doodlebug: Sorry, Lady Human, but no words are coming out.

Sweetie: Yeah, I don’t hear a thing either.

Me: Well, scratching…I mean writing…is silent until it’s read or recited.

Sweetie: That’s kind of selfish. You should share.

Me: How would I share while I’m writing?

The Pack: WRITE OUT LOUD!
