You Call That Singing? – Conversations with the Pack

I am Doodlebug, King of the Olde English Bulldogges.

Sweetie: Lady Human, are you in pain?

Me: No. Why?

Sweetie: That terrible high-pitched scream coming out of your mouth.

Me: I was singing.

Doodlebug: Is singing what humans do when they are in pain?

Me: Singing is music. It’s supposed to sound good.

Sweetie: Oh, no! MoonCat, did that sound good to you?

MoonCat: It’s all a matter of taste really. Hold onto your ears while I share my feline style of singing. I think you’ll understand.

Break the Monotony – Conversations with Sweetie

Sweetie: Roll, roll, roll your boat, gently down the cardboard…

Me: Sweetie, that’s not exactly how the old song goes.

Sweetie: It’s not your old human song, ma’am. It’s my new bulldog song. Nothing like a vigorous roll on the cardboard box accompanied by a loud song.

Me: Well, it is fun to watch.

Sweetie: Humans should try it. It’s a lot less boring than watching the Picture Box.

Singing Away Summer – Conversations with Sweetie

Sweetie: It was nice of you, Lady Human, to invite me out here while you were cleaning.

Me: Well, you looked bored and Doodlebug and MoonCat are napping.

Sweetie: I like it outside. Sometimes. For a very short time.

Me: It has been super hot, but you are my only true sunbather.

Sweetie: One thing I don’t like…that sound.

Me: Which one?

Sweetie: The one like toenails tapping nonstop. Like one of the Little Human’s wind-up toys.

Me: Oh, the locusts. Cicadas. This is their time. Summer. Heat.

Sweetie: Why do they make so much noise?

Me: I guess because they are singing away summer.

Sweetie: I wish they would stop. Are locusts tougher than bulldogs?

Me: Nope.

Sweetie: Then they’re not a problem then, are they? I’ll take care of this! Hey, locusts! Quiet!

Me: I don’t think they’re listening to you.

Sweetie: I’ll make ’em listen. I’ll just throw my bulldog weight around. Where are they?

Me: Up in the trees.

Sweetie: Cowards.

Singing vs. Howling – Conversations with Doodlebug and Sweetie

I am Doodlebug, King of the Olde English Bulldogges.

Sweetie: What is that awful noise?

Me: You wouldn’t happen to be referring to my singing, would you?

Doodlebug: Yes, yes. That’s what it is. Mystery solved.

Me: I’m not a great singer, but it’s not that bad.

Sweetie: Let me show you how it’s done, Lady Human. OOWWEEE! HOOOOO!

Me: Now that’s what I call noise.

Sweetie: How dare you? That is the song of my people!

Me: Aren’t singing and howling two different things?

Doodlebug: Not when you do it, Lady Human.
